Broncos trade Randy Gregory to 49ers

The Denver Broncos were ready to cut Randy Gregory but found a trade partner instead. Denver is sending Gregory and a 2024 7th-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2024 6th-round pick, ESPN NFL insider first reported Friday.

Initially, the intention was to release him and Schefter reported that the Broncos wanted, “to focus on its young players.”

On top of this, the remainder of Gregory’s guaranteed $14 million salary will be paid for by the Denver Broncos. The 49ers will only pay Gregory the veteran minimum this season and the rest of his contract after this year will not be guaranteed, per Schefter. The Broncos signed Gregory away from the Dallas Cowboys to a five-year, $70 million deal in March of 2022.

49ers General Manager John Lynch has done it again. Moves like this prove why Lynch is one of the best executives in the entire league. The 49ers are all in this season and getting Gregory for peanuts will surely upset many people around the league.

Gregory will be able to add to an already loaded 49ers defense and will be able to play with some of the NFL’s best defensive linemen. It will be exciting to see how the 49ers coaching and players will be able to elevate Gregory’s game and, hopefully, he can make an early impact.

It is unclear if Gregory will make his first appearance on Sunday against the Cowboys, the team that drafted him, or if they will wait to play him until the following week. With this addition, the 49ers add even more depth, and the only position on the team that is questionable is cornerback.

The 49ers are serious Super Bowl contenders this season, and adding this veteran presence for a bargain makes them even more of a threat to the rest of the league.
