Denver Broncos 2023 Training Camp Preview

The Denver Broncos might’ve been the most disappointing team in recent memory. After acquiring Russell Wilson in the off-season, expectations were sky-high in the Mile High City. However, this team would fall flat on their face and finish 5-12. This off-season, they traded for Sean Peyton in hopes he can fix Wilson and bring this team back from the depths. They have some things to figure out, which we will highlight in the 2023 Denver Broncos Training Camp preview.

Three position battles to watch

No. 2 Receiver: Courtland Sutton vs. Tim Patrick vs. Marvin Mims

I do not like the Broncos receiving room. I’ll be honest. There’s a huge logjam and they would’ve been wise to unload Courtland Sutton before the draft, yet here we are. Sutton’s stock has never been lower, which coincides with his play on the field. Tim Patrick is coming off a torn ACL from camp last year, and Marvin Mims was taken in the second round in this year’s draft. Mims might already be the second-best receiver on this roster behind Jerry Jeudy. Mims would be a better fit in the slot, but if he outperforms Sutton and Patrick in camp, he might be forced to play outside.

Inside Linebacker: Alex Singleton vs. Josey Jewell vs. Drew Sanders

This is really more so who wins the job to play with Alex Singleton. Singleton finished the year with 163 total tackles, fifth most in the NFL. Josey Jewell is a fan favorite but has an injury history. Drew Sanders was the highest-ranked linebacker entering the 2023 NFL Draft from Trey, and I don’t hate the take. Sanders was supposed to be a pass rusher but developed nice coverage skills. But he still has it in him to get after the Quarterback. It seems like Sanders’ job to lose.

Starting Center: Lloyd Cushenberry III vs. Kyle Fuller

I’ll be honest, I don’t have much for this part of the Denver Broncos 2023 training camp preview. I know that the interior of this Broncos line wasn’t great, and Lloyd Cushenberry is not a starting-caliber center. The Broncos brought in Kyle Fuller in free agency, who has experience playing with Wilson. Fuller isn’t very good either if we are being honest, so maybe it’ll be a competition as to who stinks the least who wins the job.

Ready To Breakout: Jerry Jeudy

Jerry Jeudy is my player who is most ready to breakout because he really doesn’t have a choice. After being the highest-drafted wide receiver in Broncos history in 2020, he has yet to live up to expectations. He finished the year on a nice note last season, but that just creates lofty expectations in 2023. The Broncos picked up his fifth-year option, but if he struggles out of the gates this year, don’t be shocked if he finishes the year on a different team.

Rookie To Watch: Marvin Mims

I was torn between Mims and Sanders, but I think Mims has a better chance to make a bigger impact on this team immediately. He is a burner who can destroy you in the open field. He also will likely win the punt return duties as Montrell Washington is absolutely terrible. Mims could see a lot of targets in his rookie year, and I’d expect him to put up decent yardage, especially after the catch in this new-look offense.

Fantasy Sleeper: Russell Wilson

I’ll give you a second to stop laughing before we continue.

Got it out of your system? Great. For as awful as this Denver Broncos team was in 2022, Wilson managed to finish as QB16. He is currently QB18 with an ADP of 133.7. He’s sitting behind Anthony Richardson, who is somehow QB12 with an ADP of 105.4. Wilson has a real shot to finish in the QB10 range this year if Peyton can turn his performance around. Wilson is 100% with a late-round flier if you have your QBs already sorted before.
