Dennis Schroder has signed with the Toronto Raptors. This was first reported by Woj on Twitter.
Masai Ujiri has found a replacement for Fred VanVleet after he has signed with the Houston Rockets. The Raptors have signed Dennis Schroder for 2 years and $26 million. While Schroder can replace the void by VanVleet, as indicated by the deal, this might only be a short-term option for the Raptors. Schroder is a respected PG around the league. He is considered a starter for most teams.
He posted a 12.6 PPG on 41.5% shooting, 4.5 APG, and 2.5 RPG stat line for the Lakers last year. He has be more productive in the past with teams like OKC in 2020 and Atlanta in 2018. Schroder will have a decent chance to be a scorer and distributor in Toronto playing with Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, and now Gradey Dick. It seems that the Raptors still do want to contend but will be needing more than Schroder to do that. After failing to make the playoffs last year, the Raptors are still trying to be competitive in the Eastern Conference.
This is a low-risk high-reward add for the Raptors. The Raptors knew they shouldn’t pay Fred VanVleet $43.3 million like the Rockets did. They made a smart deal and will hopefully add more to get back in the playoffs. Dennis Schroder will try to find his footing again with a new team. This role should be able to let him be more productive for the Raptors. The Lakers had LeBron and Anthony Davis, along with other contributors to really restrict Schroders role. We will see if it works out for Dennis Schroder and the Toronto Raptors this 2023-2024 NBA season.
