There is no doubt that the Georgia Bulldogs are one of the powerhouses of college football. Georgia has won two National Championships over the past three years, in part due to Kirby Smart and a surplus of incredible talent. Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has picked up on this trend, with Houston going into the Georgia draft well this year selecting cornerback Kamari Lassiter with its first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Ryans commended Lassiter and the way Smart runs his program when Ryans was speaking to Houston Texans media.
“You have to have that next-play mentality and at Georgia, Kirby has done a great job, you can tell, of raising them the right way,” Ryans said. “You get a Georgia guy you know you’re getting an NFL player.”
Lassiter was a three-year player at Georgia and started his last two years at cornerback. He was named second-team All-SEC in 2023 and left Georgia as a two-time National Champion. The Texans selected Lassiter with the No. 42 pick in the hopes of him starting opposite Derek Stingley Jr. Now, it seems like Ryans is happy with what he is seeing from the young cornerback.
This is a bold statement from Ryans because as sports fans know no futures are certain when it comes to the NFL draft. However, Ryans believes that Smart’s Georgia prospects are a different breed when it comes to transitioning to the next level. It seems that other NFL teams might feel the same way based on recent NFL Drafts. Georgia has had 33 players selected in the past three drafts.
Moreover, there have been 10 Bulldogs selected in the first round and five players picked in the second round. Also, these players are coming from both sides of the ball all across the field. It is fair to say that DeMeco Ryans is correct that Kirby Smart has made Georgia a top NFL pipeline. Ultimately, fans will have to wait some years to see the true success rate of all of these drafted Georgia Bulldogs.
