Delanie Walker: “I Think Anthony Firkser Will Be Elite”

Who’s the next man up at TE for the Tennessee Titans? It seems to be Anthony Firkser. Jonnu Smith, one of my favorite TEs last year, has now gone to the New England Patriots. Jonnu Smith had signed a contract with the Patriots after what some would call a desperation clinic by Bill Belichick. Delanie Walker was on the Titans from 2013-2019, but he thinks the next best thing for the Titans at TE is Anthony Firkser. Full quote below provided by ProFootballTalk:

“He sat under me for years and I tried to teach him everything I know, but the dude’s got wiggles. He can get open, he can catch the ball. I think he’s going to be elite,” Walker said, via NFL Media. “Just adding Julio [Jones], it’s gonna open … more opportunities for him — over the middle, with matchups against linebackers. And that’s gonna be hard for them to cover him, ’cause he destroys linebackers within seconds. It’s gonna be good.”

Firkser and Walker were teammates in 2018-2019. After Jonnu Smith took over the TE position for the Titans last year, it might be Firkser’s time to shine.

“I feel like it’s going to be a good year for him,” Walker said. “I’m excited. I hope he does well, ‘cause I want him to get paid. That’s what it comes down to, just hope he does well. I know he built his confidence over the years. Now he has that opportunity to be the starter. I told him the last time I saw him, I said, ‘It’s your opportunity, don’t lose it — cause they don’t give it to many people often.’

“He has the opportunity to be great. And I think with Julio and A.J. [Brown] and Derrick Henry, that opportunity is high.”

High praise from a very solid TE back in his golden years. Firkser has a career of 72 receptions, 816 yards, and 3 TDs. This includes having 39 receptions, 387 yards, and 1 TD last year. Anthony Firkser’s stock may have gone way up on my list. I’ll also be looking at him for fantasy, given his opportunity to start. Let’s see if he’s up to the challenge.
