San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox, who has played through a left pinkie finger injury he suffered in training camp, will be undergoing season-ending surgery on said finger, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported Thursday.
Given how the season’s unfolded with San Antonio, it makes sense why the procedure would be done now without delaying it any longer.
The Spurs are 4.5 games out of the play-in spot in a deep Western Conference at 27-37. Victor Wembanyama is unfortunately done for the season with a blood clot in his shoulder, which is very worrisome.
In 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.5 steals on 44.6 percent shooting, including 27.4 percent from 3-point range and 81.9 percent from the free-throw line. There’s no question that Fox’s finger injury affected his percentages, even though he’s never been a high-volume 3-point shooter outside of last season, when he canned a career-best 36.9 percent of his 7.8 3-point attempts per game.
A full offseason for recovery is the best for everyone. It also allows San Antonio to focus on the 2025 NBA Draft, where they are expected to have at least two first-round picks (three total): Their own and Atlanta’s unprotected first.
To say semi-jokingly: If the Spurs win the lottery and land Cooper Flagg, the NBA is officially #rigged™. Fox, Stephon Castle, Flagg and Wembanyama would be unfair. But at the same time, it would be objectively cool to watch them all compete together in a loaded Western Conference.
