David Savard Retires After Canadiens Playoff Exit

Like Marc-Andre Fleury, the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs were the last dance for another key veteran player. Defenseman David Savard has called it a career after the Canadiens were bounced from postseason play.

Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports was the first to report the news. Savard was shown a ton of respect by the Capitals and his teammates during the handshake line.

Savard, 34, played 870 games during his 14-year career. He ends his career with 54 goals, 188 assists, and a -29 rating. Of course, Savard was always a defensive defenseman, so the point totals were not really his game. He was part of some bad teams in Columbus that tanked his +/- rating.

The good news is that Savard does go out as a champion. He was part of the 2021 championship run with Tampa Bay after Columbus traded him there. He only played 20 games with the Lightning, but it’s hard to complain about that stint. He finished his career with Montreal and that’s all she wrote.

The former fourth round pick in the 2009 NHL Draft finishes his career with $37,259,275 in career earnings. Not a bad ticket for a guy who wasn’t asked to ever put the puck in the back of the net. A lot of that comes from spending most of his time in Columbus, but he still signed a pretty nice ticket at the end of his career with Montreal.

Whatever Savard decides to do next, cheers to a hell of a career.
