David Njoku wants out of Cleveland. Njoku officially requested a trade earlier this week but this is something that has been brewing for a long time. The only thing I don’t understand is how Njoku has been criticized for the move. The right move is the to get from Cleveland and fast.
Njoku is a player with talent. 2019 was a rough year from everybody in Cleveland not named Nick Chubb. In 2018, Njoku showed a ton of promise. 56 receptions, 639 yards, and 4 touchdowns was a great 2nd year. The former first round pick was on the verge of becoming one of the best young tight ends in football. Then Freddie Kitchens and injuries happened. For some odd reason, you can’t find someone to say anything nice about Njoku. But why?
Cleveland is ruining his brand. Odell Beckham said it best. Players go to the Browns to die. Njoku doesn’t want to die. I can’t blame him for that. The reality is, this Browns team has too many mouths to feed. Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Rashard Higgins, Kareem Hunt, and Nick Chubb. That’s just the wide outs and running backs.
The Austin Hooper signing for Cleveland didn’t make any sense to me. That says that David Njoku is expendable. The Browns also drafted Harrison Bryant in the Draft. Why should Njoku battle for 2nd or 3rd string duties? Njoku has every right to want out given the circumstances.
Think of how many teams that could actually use Njoku? The Patriots have a need despite taking two rookies in the draft. Dallas has an unproven Blake Jarwin. Houston is relying on Darren Fells. Carolina is going with Ian Thomas. Green Bay doesn’t have a proven tight end either. Njoku can make a real impact with a number of teams. Just get this man out of Cleveland.
