Dave Sims to replace John Sterling as Yankees’ radio broadcaster

Seattle Mariners television broadcaster Dave Sims will replace the legendary John Sterling as the New York Yankees’ radio broadcaster, the team announced Thursday.

Sterling retired after 35 seasons in April before announcing he’d return for the postseason in late September. Justin Shackil, Rickie Ricardo and Emmanuel Berbari helped fill in for Sterling throughout the 2024 season alongside Suzyn Waldman, but now she will have a full-time play-by-play voice calling games.

Sims, 71, now makes a return to New York, where he began his media career with the New York Daily News. He worked for WFAN in the late 80s and early 90s, co-hosting a New York Sports Radio show midday with Ed Coleman after hosting WNBC’s SportsNight from 1986-88.

He has been the Mariners’ television broadcaster for the last 17 seasons alongside former Mariners infielder Mike Blowers for ROOT Sports. Sims won three consecutive Washington Sportscaster of the Year awards (2018-20) from the National Sports Media Association and cohosts a “Basketball & Beyond with Coach K” show on Sirius XM with former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

When baseball season isn’t going on, the longtime broadcaster and two-time Emmy Award winner calls Big East college basketball games on FS1. He’s also previously worked for Westwood One–where he called Sunday Night Football and the NCAA Tournament–ESPN and Versus, where he did play-by-play for the UFL for one season.

It’s never easy to replace a living legend like John Sterling, but Sims’ lively, electric energy should be a key addition to the Yankees’ booth. Here’s a look at some of his best calls:
