We all know by this point that Barstool owner Dave Portnoy loves the Michigan Wolverines. He has been an outspoken fan of the program for a number of years and was elated when Michigan won the College Football National Championship last season. To say that the program has taken a massive hit offensively in 2024 is an understatement, as J.J. McCarthy declared this off-season.
This season, Michigan has been led by both Davis Warren (who absolutely stinks) and Alex Orji (who is better but might still really stink). Warren and Orji do not have what it takes to lead this program back to the CFP and make a legitimate run at defending their title. Dave Portnoy is willing to help out the cause of getting a legit talent to Ann Arbor, stating he would go as high as $3 million in NIL funds for the program.
Full quote via SI.com:
“I will be your quarterback guy,” Portnoy said. “You just say, ‘Dave, you go…’ — I’ll talk to Sherrone, ‘who do you guys want? Who’s in there? Give me your group, I’ll go get them.’ I will sign them. A million, two million, whatever it is.”
If you’re a Wolverine fan, this has to be music to your ears…if Dave Portnoy is serious. If he actually intends to make a donation of $3 million to Michigan’s NIL fund to bring in a top-level Quarterback, rest assured they are going to land someone massive either in the transfer portal or through High School recruiting. Michigan still has the dominant ground game and great defense, but their quarterback play is going to hinder them going forward. If they can land a premier signal-caller, they would be one of the favorites to win it all again that next season.
