For the first time ever, college athletes are now allowed to make money off of their name, image and likeness. Barstool Sports and Dave Portnoy have officially entered the game, and they created Barstool Athletics Inc.
Portnoy, the founder and Chief of Content at Barstool Sports, tweeted out a video congratulating their first ever Barstool Athlete Adelaide Halverson from Jacksonville State.
Barstool athletes will receive exclusive merchandise, pizza, and access to Barstool parties, all for free. The qualification to be part of this new group? “Be a Division One athlete and blink at me.” People took that and ran with it, and within thirty minutes, he had built up a roster of so many people he had to pause the announcement.
People then began tweeting at Portnoy, and he just started making deals on Twitter.
“Barstool Athletes Inc… I just made it up in my head, we may become the most powerful agency in the world”
Dave Portnoy
I expect this to continue for the rest of the summer and for it to become a lot more clear what Barstool will actually be providing to their athletes. Overall, it is a huge day for college sports and any athlete in general. It sucks this NIL stuff took so long, but I expect this to be a major win for all involved.
