Darren Waller officially retires from NFL after 8 seasons
New York Giants tight end Darren Waller has informed the team that he is retiring from the NFL after eight seasons, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first to report Sunday.
He has not participated in any workouts and the team “had known for some time” that there was a possibility of him not playing, per Rapoport.
This news comes over three months after Waller said he would be making a decision on retiring “pretty soon,” according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
Waller, 31, played in just one season with the Giants after he was traded by the Las Vegas Raiders for a 3rd round pick ahead of the 2023 season. He signed a three-year, $51 million extension with Las Vegas ahead of the 2022 season.
Since this is a post-June 1 transaction, the Giants will save approximately $11.63 million in cap for 2024, per Spotrac. He will have dead cap hits of $2.5 million for 2024 and $4.9 million in 2025.
He caught 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown–which came in Week 7 against the Washington Commanders–last season.
Waller, a sixth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, spent eight combined seasons with the Baltimore Ravens (two seasons) and Las Vegas Raiders (five seasons). He recorded 350 career receptions with 4,124 yards and 20 touchdowns with one Pro-Bowl appearance in 2020.
“We have great respect for Darren as a person and player,” the Giants’ statement read on Waller retiring. “We wish him nothing but the best.”
