Former Minnesota Vikings EDGE Danielle Hunter has signed with the Houston Texans, according to NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport. ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported that the deal will be $48 million guaranteed for two years. Hunter will have the opportunity to earn an additional $3 million through incentives.
Hunter was highly productive in his eight seasons as a Viking. In his career, he has logged 87.5 sacks and 108 tackles for loss. As a result, Hunter was elected to the Pro Bowl four times.
In 2023, Hunter had one of the best seasons in his career. The star pass rusher finished the year with 16.5 sacks and a league-leading 23 tackles for loss. If Hunter comes close to that level of play in Houston, he will form a great pass-rushing duo alongside Will Anderson.
This move continues the Texans’ aggressive offseason. The team made a big splash as they traded for running back Joe Mixon. Furthermore, they made several smaller moves that helped improve the overall quality of the roster.
The Vikings and Hunter consistently struggled to find common ground on a long-term deal. Prior to the 2023 season, teams were looking to trade for the pass rusher, but Minnesota opted to keep him in town on a one-year deal.
The loss of Hunter is not a shock for the Vikings. The team had already aggressively attacked the EDGE market during free agency. That began with signing former Texans EDGE Jonathan Greenard. Additionally, they added Dolphins EDGE Andrew Van Ginkel. That pairing will be the new duo for the Vikings.
