A week after being released by the New York Giants, quarterback Daniel Jones has found a new home! The sixth-year signal caller is electing to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz first reported Wednesday.
Jones, 27, will join the Vikings’ practice squad upon signing. He was released last week after another disappointing start in New York, completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
This is yet another reclamation project behind center that head coach Kevin O’Connell will have to work with. Before they drafted rookie JJ McCarthy No. 10 overall, Minnesota inked a one-year deal with former No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold after stops with the Jets, Panthers and 49ers.
So far, the results have been spectacular, as Darnold is having the best season of his career in the most quarterback-friendly environment he’s ever been in. He’s completed 67.6 percent of his attempts for 2,717 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions through 11 games, where the Vikings are 9-2. Darnold has an excellent supporting cast–Justin Jefferson, arguably the NFL’s best receiver, Jordan Addison, Aaron Jones and TJ Hockenson–coupled with a solid offensive line and strong defense.
Now, Jones joins the fold after being in a poor environment in New York. We see the value of having a quality backup quarterback in today’s NFL–Jones is far from perfect. But he’s also a clear upgrade over Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien while McCarthy recovers from injury. This is a good dart throw from Minnesota, even if Jones doesn’t get any game reps while donning purple and gold.
Better yet, Minnesota could earn a comp pick if Jones, a free agent after this season, signs elsewhere. If they keep him, he can help mentor McCarthy. It’s a zero-risk move. Great business by Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and the Minnesota Vikings.
