UFC President Dana White is exploring a relatively new combat sport: slap fighting. The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) voted to regulate and oversee White’s new slap fighting promotion, Dana White’s Power Slap League, according to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi.
One of the main goals of Dana White’s Power Slap League is to make the sport safe for competition. Over the past year, Power Slap League has worked with NSAC officials to develop the sport’s structure and rules.
The sport will resemble MMA in certain regards. For example, it will have weight classes, competitive matchmaking and medical requirements. In addition, the rule set will create fouls, determine slap areas and make safety equipment like mouthguards and earplugs mandatory. Matches will be scored on the 10-9 must system, the same system is used in boxing and MMA.
“After testing it, it became clear to us that there’s massive potential here as a sport, not unlike the early years of the UFC,” UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell said. “It made all the sense in the world to go toward regulation before the sport’s commencing, for all the obvious reasons — No. 1, the health and safety of the competitors.”
Dana White’s Power Slap League is the first regulated version of slap fighting. As a result, this version of slap-fighting will be safer and more organized than current regional-level shows.
If you are unfamiliar with slap fighting, it is a simple concept. Simply put, two fighters take turns slapping each other. Below is an example from one of the safest slap fighting promotions.
Dana White’s Slap Boxing promotion will not fall under the UFC banner. The promotion is owned by White and several other investors. These investors include White, Campbell, Fertitta Capital, which is owned by Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, and Endeavor, among others.
