The Dan Mullen era doesn’t look so bad anymore, huh? The former Ursinus College grad posted a record of 34-15 with the Gators. He also helped Dak Prescott develop at Mississippi State prior to landing at Florida. Mullen is a good coach. He was just never going to take Florida back to the promise land. The problem is Florida has gone totally backward since Billy Napier got the job.
It turns out Mullen tried to advise Florida on who should replace him once he was let go after the 2021 season. Mullen claims that he warned the program that Lane Kiffin should be his replacement over Billy Napier.
“You know what’s pretty funny? When I got let go at Florida a couple years ago, they asked me and I said, ‘Hey, I’d go hire Lane Kiffin right now,’” Mullen said during an appearance on “The Zach Gelb Show” earlier this week. “I said, ‘If you’re going to get rid of me, I’d go hire Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss right now.’ He kind of has that, a little bit of that, you know at Florida, they love points. He’s going to continue the offense to run points.
“He’s walking in with an Anthony Richardson, you’re walking in with a top-five draft pick at quarterback, so the program’s in good shape offensively that way. There were some high-powered receivers committed and on the roster, so I think he would have been a great fit right off the bat.”
Napier, of course, has been a total disaster since taking over the program. He’s 12-16 with the Gators, which is obviously viewed as terrible and it’s significantly worse than how Mullen got the team to perform. It’s only a matter of time before Napier gets caned. We all knew that was coming the second he couldn’t open a water bottle.
