March 11th, 2024: Dan Monson and Long Beach State have mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the season.
March 13th, 2024: The Big West Conference Tournament starts.
March 16th, 2024: Dan Monson and Long Beach State have won the Big West Conference Tournament and are going to be playing in the NCAA Tournament.
In less than a week, Dan Monson went from having one foot forced out the door and being pushed out to winning the Big West tournament. It might be one of the most maddening things we have seen in March and that’s saying something. It’s one of the best stories in college basketball this year and it is a story to watch going into the NCAA Tournament. There are some really important questions we need to ask though. Um, why couldn’t he be fired AFTER all the basketball they would have played this season? Why would you fire a coach BEFORE their conference tournament where you can still make the NCAA Tournament?
That just didn’t make any sense to me. I can understand the move of parting ways with Dan Monson, you know, AFTER the season is over. He hasn’t had TOO much success to where this is an egregious firing. In 17 years with Monson, they have won their conference tournament twice, and have finished 1st in the conference for the regular season 4 times. Not ideal, but not the worst you would have seen.
Dan Monson has already won, 15-seed Long Beach State can lose by 40 to 2-seed Arizona and it doesn’t matter. Dan Monson took the disrespect of being fired before the season is over after coaching the team for 17 years and then won the conference tournament to go to the Big Dance. That’s the best F-you you can give them. “You are getting rid of me? Watch this shit.” Monson took that disrespect and will now get offers at other schools just for this. He might not be the best coach in the world, but it’s objectively hilarious. He is letting everyone know that he is out the door after Long Beach State’s season is officially done too. Look:
I love it. You might have messed up Long Beach State. If Monson somehow pulls off an upset, it’s going to look so bad on Long Beach State Athletics in general. Not just coaches, but recruits, transfers, all of that. It rubs people the wrong way when things like this are done correctly, and it shows.
