Damian Lillard made some history in the shoe industry on Wednesday, signing a lifetime contract with Adidas, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania was the first to report. His deal with Adidas expired during the offseason.
Lillard becomes the first NBA player with Adidas to ink a lifetime shoe endorsement–and the fourth NBA player to ever do so. The only others were LeBron James and Kevin Durant (Nike) and Stephen Curry (Under Armour/Curry Brand). That’s some pretty company, I’ll say!
According to Charania, Lillard will exceed $600 million in career earnings with his on-court salaries and shoe contracts. The official terms of the deal were not been released, however.
Considering he has been the premier face of Adidas for over the last decade, it’s not surprising he’s getting a lifetime deal. It’s even less surprising with the USA headquarters in Portland, where he spent most of his career and, for the most part, is still beloved. Lillard, 34, isn’t the only premier NBA name to be associated with Adidas. Others include Anthony Edwards, James Harden and Donovan Mitchell, among others.
He joined Adidas upon entering the NBA in 2012-13. He currently has nine iterations of his “Dame” shoes, with the first Dame 1 shoe being released in 2015 and the Dame 9’s being released earlier this fall.
This comes immediately after Lillard helped lead the Bucks to an Emirates NBA Cup Title (in the cup’s second year), even though the championship game’s stats don’t count.
For the season, Lillard is averaging 25.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists on 45.0 percent from the floor, 37.1 percent from 3-point range and 91.6 percent from the free-throw line. Over his last nine games, however, he’s posting 27.1 points on 47.7/43.8/91.8 shooting splits.
