This is not breaking news, but this also isn’t the first time that Damian Lillard has expressed his view on ring chasing. Lillard made it clear on the “It Is What It Is” podcast that he would never join the Golden State Warriors, his hometown team.
“As far as Golden State, I respect what they’ve been doing over the last eight, nine years or whatever. And I’m from there, obviously that’s home, but I can’t go be a part of that,” Lillard said.
”They’ve won four championships, what I look like going to try to do that? … There’s somebody that plays my position (Stephen Curry), that’s behind LeBron (James), the best player of this era. To me, that doesn’t even make sense. I’d never do nothing like that, I’d lose every year before I go [to the Warriors].”
Trust me, Dame, we know you would rather lose every year. You are 1-12 against the Warriors in the playoffs and in the only Western Conference Finals visit of your career, they swept you. If anyone knows a thing or two about losing to the Warriors, it’s Damian Lillard.
Despite this, Lillard has been one of the most loyal players in the modern NBA. He has always embraced “never running from the grind” and working hard to bring the team that drafted him a championship. Unfortunately for Lillard, Portland just isn’t the place to do it. The organization has not been able to put the pieces together and it’s clear that Lillard needs a new home.
Damian Lillard trade talks have been ramping up again with the Miami Heat as front runners and a few other teams–such as the Toronto Raptors, reportedly— joining the mix.
Lillard deserves a better shot at a title than Portland and it is looking like he might get it. If he doesn’t win a ring, he will go down as one of the better players to never hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
