Damian Lillard is the biggest waste of talent in the modern NBA, and there’s no question about it. This is not a bold take by any means, but it is still a fact nonetheless. Last night the Trail Blazers completely blew a stellar performance from Lillard as he finished with 55 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds. Yet the Blazers lost in double overtime to the Nuggets and are now down three games to two in the series. Not to mention CJ McCollum stepped out of bounds on a key possession in the second overtime and pretty much sealed Portland’s fate.
The Blazers have a decent team on paper. Lillard, McCollum, Jusuf Nurkic, Norman Powell, Robert Covington, Enes Kanter, and Carmelo Anthony are all pretty damn good players as a unit. Without Jamal Murray, I would honestly go so far as to say the Blazers’ roster is better than the Nuggets. This should be the Blazers series to win, but it isn’t.
We’ve seen this time and time again. Portland shocks the world as a lower seed in the playoffs, sneaking their way in thanks to the heroic play of Lillard, and then get shut down in the first or second round. Yes, they’ve had to deal with the Warriors in the Western Conference in the past. Yes, Portland has had to overcome insane odds to beat chippy teams like the Thunder when they had Russell Westbrook and Paul George. But still, when will Damian Lillard get the reward he deserves?
Obviously, Lillard is big on loyalty, and he probably won’t go anywhere for the foreseeable future. He’s also very anti-super-team, which makes it more unlikely that he goes to a new team and more unlikely that Portland attracts a superstar player of Lillard’s caliber. Yet, the fact of the matter is the Trail Blazers will never win anything if they stay as stagnant as they have been. Just look at every team to win the finals since the start of the Warriors dynasty… If you don’t have a super-team, you simply don’t win.
