Damian Lillard diagnosed with blood clot in calf, out indefinitely

Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard will be out indefinitely after he was diagnosed with having a blood clot in his right leg, NBA insider Chris Haynes first reported Tuesday.

Lillard is the second big star in the last two months have to his season unfortunately end due to blood clots, as Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the season in mid-February after team doctors found a bloodclot in his right shoulder.

According to Haynes, Lillard is on blood thinners–which is “stabilized the blood clot.” Similar to the Wembanyama situation, he will likely be on blood thinners for a few months; regardless, this is a very serious situation that we hope he’s able to have a full recovery from.

In 58 games, he averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.1 assists on 44.8 percent shooting, including 37.6 percent from 3-point range and 92.1 percent from the free-throw line. The nine-time All-Star was in-line to potentially make another All-NBA team this season, but will no longer be eligible since he didn’t play at least 65 games.

The Bucks are currently the No. 5 seed in the East at 40-31, tied with the Detroit Pistons despite being one game ahead int the loss column. They’re two games back of the Indiana Pacers for homecourt and five games back of New York for the No. 3 seed.

Milwaukee’s been through the wringer the last four seasons with injuries. Lillard, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton were all banged up last year, Antetokounmpo injured his back in 2022-23 and the Bucks were without Khris Middleton the duration of their 2021-22 run. Now, this.

Being without Lillard almost certainly takes them out of NBA Title contention, but I will be interested to see if they can at least make it a series against Indiana or whomever they face in the opening round next month.
