Dalton Kincaid 2023 NFL Draft Profile

Dalton Kincaid is regarded as one of the best tight ends in the 2023 NFL Draft. Just how good is the Utah product? That’s pretty much what we’re here to talk about today. Let’s have a chat and go through the Dalton Kincaid 2023 NFL Draft profile!

For starters, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it 100 more times. How can I confidently turn the card in for Kincaid knowing that he isn’t the best tight end on the Utah roster? I don’t care what anybody says, Brant Kuithe is better. He just is and was the starter over Kincaid at the start of the year. I’m not taking the second best tight end on Utah. Sorry, not sorry.

That being said, there is some hidden upside here. Kincaid only played football in high school for one year. Largely to focus on basketball. That basketball background has been vital for a lot of great tight ends in the past. You know the list by now. Tony Gonzalez, Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates, etc.

Kincaid started his collegiate career playing for the San Diego Toreros. Are you willing to take anybody in the first three rounds with that kind of background? Not sure I am. We also only have one year of real production. In 2022, Kincaid posted 70 receptions for 890 yards and eight touchdowns. The year prior, it was 36 receptions for 510 yards and eight scores. The year prior, just one catch.

How much do you value blocking? Kincaid provides zero. He’s basically a glorified receiver. You’re getting all the good and bad moments of Evan Engram here. I’m one that thinks that it matters. Mostly because it makes the guessing game easier on the defense in terms of run / pass play design. He’s also not really that strong in terms of play strength.

We also have a medical thing to worry about. As someone who has a bad back, Kincaid didn’t play in the Rose Bowl because of it and just got cleared. Is that going to be a lingering issue? Do back problems ever go away? No, would be the answer from personal experience.

I have a 4th round grade on Dalton Kincaid full well knowing he’s off the board by the time I’m willing to take him. Just too big of a risk. Yes, there may be some hidden upside but at what point is it really worth it? I’m just never going to pull the trigger on a guy that played division II that early in the draft. Especially one who was the second best tight end at Utah that can’t block, with a injury history, and one year of solid production.
