Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will officially undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn hamstring, owner Jerry Jones confirmed on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday morning.
It was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter Saturday that Prescott was planning to undergo the surgery, though he was seeking one additional opinion from a specialist in New York before it was confirmed. He is expected to be fully healthy for the 2025 season.
Prescott, 31, signed a record-setting four-year, $240 million extension with $231 million guaranteed on the day the 2024 NFL Season kicked off. As it stands right, his $240 million deal is the 8th-highest in the sport, though his $231 million is the highest, $1 million more than Deshaun Watson‘s $230 million guaranteed, per Spotrac. He is on the hook for $43.4 million in 2024, but will have a $89.9 million (!!!) cap hit in 2025 with $68.0, $62.0 and $72.0 million cap hits over the next three seasons, respectively, with a potential out after 2027 (age-34 season). That’s absurd.
Prescott had a down season with Dallas after finishing No. 5 in Offensive Player of the Year voting in 2023. In eight games, he completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions, just one fewer than he had in all of 2023. His passer rating (86.0) and QBR (46.8) were also the lowest marks of his career up to this point.
It appears as if Cooper Rush will be the team’s starting quarterback unless they opt to go with Trey Lance at some point. Rush completed just 13 passes for 45 yards against Philadelphia on Sunday–yikes! Perhaps he’ll be able to settle in with Houston, Washington, the Giants, Cincinnati and Carolina over the next five weeks.
