Cubs Sign Trey Mancini with Two Year Deal

Cubs make a move late in the offseason by signing OF/1B Trey Mancini to a two year contract. The news was first reported on by Jesse Rogers and the amount has yet to be revealed.

As noted, the contract does include an opt out that Mancini can exercise after the 2023 season if he so chooses to. Although the Cubs seemingly addressed their need at 1B by signing Eric Hosmer last week. Mancini can also play the corner outfield and could be a solid DH option at the very worst.

The story of Trey Mancini is one I’m sure we are all familiar with. Being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, surviving while beating the cancer and winning a ring with the Astros last season. Its one of the better stories in baseball of late and I don’t know how you cant root for the guy.

Hell when the guy practically helped end my Phillies season with that amazing play at 1st to take away a Kyle Schwarber extra base hit, I couldn’t help but still feel happy for Mancini. He’s just the kind of guy everyone roots for and I’m happy he has a deal.

But Mancini isn’t just a great story, although he is coming off a down year in which he battled injuries. He has still always been a guy who can hit at that .250 mark and hit close to 20 home runs.

Its far from the needle pushing move this Cubs needs to be real contenders. But Mancini can serve a reliable option in a Cubs offense that was quite lackluster last season.

Again this Mancini move is far from a game changing one. This Cubs team still needs a lot of work before they can make real noise. But signing a guy like Mancini is never a bad option and is a pretty safe signing. I really hope Mancini succeeds and has a great season, again I just love wathcing the guy play good and you should to.
