Talk about a shocker. Craig Counsell seemed like he was a legitimate candidate to manage every single MLB team. I’m not sure anyone had the Cubs on their bingo card! Counsell will bolt Milwaukee and head to division rival Chicago. Oh, and David Ross is seemingly fired out of nowhere!
“The Chicago Cubs fired manager David Ross and hired Craig Counsell on Monday. The longtime Milwaukee Brewers manager was lured to Chicago with a record-setting five-year, $40 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN.”
Few things that need to be touched on:
This smashes the highest-paid manager’s salary. That was previously held by Terry Francona at $4.5 million per year. Francona isn’t even a manager anymore and has since retired. The Guardians hired Stephen Vogt, in case anyone missed that.
The Cubs gave Ross a vote of confidence on October 2nd. Not even joking. Read this article. For Chicago to turn around and fire Ross out of nowhere is crazy. Would they have kept Ross if Counsell turned them down? Just a wild turn of events.
Counsell was successful in Milwaukee. I have no idea if he’s the greatest manager ever but he won in Milwaukee. Counsell is from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and holds the franchise record for (707) and playoff wins (seven). The truth of the matter is, that the Brewers have better players than the Cubs. We’ll see if he can win like that in Chicago.
