Craig Breslow hints Red Sox can win more games without Rafael Devers

The Boston Red Sox made a franchise-altering decision on Sunday, trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a five-player package headlined by Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks.

If you thought fans’ distrust in the organization’s front office was already bad, Sunday’s damage to a homegrown favorite, the franchise player, is irreparable. Even though nothing that Red Sox president Craig Breslow was going to say would’ve been looked at fondly, he made a bold proclamation regarding the Red Sox’s chances at winning games without their superstar slugger.

“I do think there’s a real chance that at the end of the season, we’re looking back and we’ve won more games than we otherwise would’ve,” Breslow said, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

We are still a month-and-a-half away from the trade deadline, so there’s still time for the Red Sox to improve their roster–even though there’s no replacing what they traded away in Devers, one of the best designated hitters in MLB. They could also completely bottom out over the next 30 games, trade Alex Bregman, Jarren Duran and other pieces of value and completely reset heading into 2026.

There’s a lot of time–too much time–for a ton of different outcomes.

Boston just lost their best offensive player, have their headliner starting his stint in Triple-A while Hicks is likely to join a taxed Boston bullpen. Bregman and Wilyer Abreu are currently shelved with injuries, and now Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell are tasked to save the season while they’re still trying to develop as major league bats.

Boston’s recently had reliable sources of offense (Carlos Narvaez, Abraham Toro, Ceddanne Rafaela). But Breslow saying they will be better without Devers–whether it’s in the win-loss column or not–feels like a premature statement made by an individual who’s doubling down on a move that should’ve never happened in the first place.
