Corey Seager Is The Best Offensive Shortstop In Baseball

Stars comprise the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s fitting for a team that plays in lala land. Everyone knows Mookie Betts and Clayton Kershaw, but what about the man playing shortstop? The man who won Most Valuable Player for last year’s NLCS and World Series? The man who won rookie of the year in 2016 unanimously? Well, it’s Corey Seager, the best offensive shortstop in all of baseball.

Statistics

Corey Seager has all the ingredients for an MVP-caliber year. It hasn’t been an easy road for him. He dealt with Tommy John surgery in 2018 coming off stellar 2016 and ’17 campaigns. In 2019, it was all about getting his swing back in shape. 2020 albeit shortened, featured unbelievable offensive numbers from Seager, hitting .307 with a .943 OPS. It carried over into the postseason too, hitting .320 with eight home runs and a 1.172 OPS over 18 games. He hasn’t let up even. This Spring Training, he’s hitting .400 with six home runs. There doesn’t seem to be anything getting in his way.

Hey! What About That Tatis Guy?

People hype up Padres Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Realistically, it is mostly flash. Yes, he is a great defensive shortstop, but pitchers have figured out how to pitch to him. He dropped off in the last month, only hitting .208 with four home runs. Yet, the sportswriters still were slobbering all over him and elected him a Silver Slugger with a fair .277 batting average. Remember, Seager hit .307 and had a higher OPS at .943 while Tatis had a .937. Seager definitely deserved the award over Tatis. The Dodgers also specifically have figured out how to pitch to Tatis hitting .205 against them in 10 games, and .182 against them in the NLDS.

In 2021, there’s bad news for Tatis as San Diego will play Los Angeles 19 times during the regular season. The point being is Seager has already gotten over this hump and has the maturity to play to a high standard with few to little setbacks.
