Corey Kispert signs four-year extension with Wizards

The Washington Wizards have signed sharpshooting guard Corey Kispert to a four-year, $54 million rookie-scale extension, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Monday.

He’s the third player Monday to sign an extension hours ahead of the 6 p.m. deadline–joining Trey Murphy III and Jalen Green.

Kispert, 25, has been a knockdown 3-point shooter since entering the league. Last year, he shot 38.3 percent from 3-point range after being a 42.4 percent 3-point threat as a sophomore in 2022-23. Over his career, over 62 percent of his shots have come from 3-point range, canning them at a 38.8 percent clip.

His new deal is incredibly team-friendly, beginning at $12.1 million in 2025-26 through 2028-29; he will never account for 7.8 percent of the cap, a complete steal for a consistently impactful 3-point shooter. He’s not a great defender, but 3-point specialists don’t grow on trees.

One can’t help but wonder if general manager Will Dawkins will do the same thing with Kispert that he did with Avdija. Avdija, who’s still two years younger than Kispert, signed a front-loaded four-year, $55 million deal last October before getting traded to Portland last summer. By being an ascending commodity with a very reasonable contract, Avdija brought back two first-round picks, including the No. 14 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft that landed Bub Carrington.

Kispert may not be as good of a player as Avdija, but he will be an attractive asset for teams that need reliable 3-point shooting. He likely won’t be traded until next summer due to the poison pill provision, but if there’s an opportunity for Washington to stack assets (which is what they should be doing), Kispert could be dangled.
