The 2024 Copa America begins on June 20th in the United States, with six CONCACAF teams set to compete in the tournament. Over the next couple of weeks, we will preview every team playing in the competition. Up next is Venezuela!
Venezuela is entering the Copa America as the 54th-ranked team in the FIFA rankings and the nation is another team hoping to win their first-ever Copa America. Let’s see how the squad looks heading into the competition.
Coming into this year’s edition of the tournament, Venezuela has qualified for the last 18 Copa America. With the last appearance in 2021, being eliminated in the group stage.
Venezuela’s best finish in their Copa America appearances came in 2011 with a fourth-place finish. The last best finish for the CONCACAF nation came in the 2019 edition of the Copa America with a quarterfinal exit.
Boasting one of the weaker squads in the entire tournament, Venezuela will have to face teams that have way better players. They do have some players playing in notable leagues. Such as winger Jefferson Savarino who is currently playing in the Brazilian Serie A.
Venezuela has a member of their squad playing in Ligue 1 with Cristian Cásseres Jr. Casseres had 5 G/A in the 2023-24 season with Toulouse.
Fernando Batista will be leading the Venezuelan National Team to the Copa America. The Argentinian was previously an assistant with the national team before getting promoted to manager. Batista also coached the Argentina youth teams as well.
Venezuela is probably the worst team in a weak group From the jump, the nation will have to face better opponents than them. They would hope even for a draw in the first game against Ecuador and still have a chance in their second match against Mexico.
Sorry Venezuela, but you guys won’t do much in the Copa America. While everyone likes a good underdog story, it won’t happen here. I see the Venezuela National Team going winless, ending at the bottom with a group-stage exit.
