After nearly two years removed from a horrific leg injury, Conor McGregor has announced his UFC return. The Irishmen took to X Sunday to announce that he will return to MMA on June 29 in Las Vegas, Nev., against Michael Chandler. The fight will be the feature bout for International Fight Week.
Let’s get one very clear disclaimer out of the way: This is McGregor announcing his own fight news. I am not saying he is lying, but it would not be the first time that he trolled fans to have a good time.
McGregor’s announcement comes days after UFC CEO Dana White stated the two sides were actively working on booking his next fight.
It has long been expected that McGregor’s return will be against Chandler. The pair have already coached against one another on The Ultimate Fighter. In that scenario, coaches usually fight one another. Plus, the bout makes logical sense as it is an exciting matchup between two fighters who have struggled against the lightweight division’s premier talent in recent fights.
The real question left is the weight class. It would be a shock to see McGregor and Chandler fight at middleweight. In the past, McGregor has fought lightweights in the welterweight division. It seems illogical to have two lightweights fight at middleweight- 30 pounds above their normal weight class.
Chandler added that he is fine with the 185-pound weight stipulation.
It should be noted that this bout is not official and has not been signed. Until the UFC officially announces the fight, it is fair to be skeptical. The announcement coming shortly after a meeting with White should provide MMA fans with a fair amount of optimism.
