Connor Seabold: Another Failed Chaim Bloom Acquisition?

Connor Seabold: Another Failed Chaim Bloom Acquisition?

The hits just keep on coming. I tried to tell Chaim Bloom that this was going to happen and he didn’t listen. The 40 man roster crunch is real. You can’t just hoard all these guys and get away with it. He didn’t listen and now the Red Sox are paying the consequences. Thad Ward, Jeter Downs, Darwinzon Hernandez, and now Connor Seabold. All young players that have now been essentially given away because there is no spot for them.

The Sox DFA’d Seabold today in a corresponding move to add Corey Kluber to the 40-man roster. For those that don’t know who Seabold is, he was included in the trade that also brought Nick Pivetta to Boston via Philadelphia. A trade I wasn’t fond of at the time. In fairness, Pivetta has been better than both Workman and Hembree were in Philadelphia combined. I just didn’t ever understand the Seabold part of it. We now know he was a wasted piece of the deal.

Seabold actually did have some talent. He could have maybe developed into a back of the rotation guy. Maybe even still can. David Price complimented him once upon a time. Does that mean anything? What probably killed Seabold is that he dealt with elbow injuries in 2021. Seabold’s velocity only sits at about 92 and the slider / changeup doesn’t have a ton of bite on them. When all three primary pitches look about the same, you’re not going to get MLB hitters out. I felt that way at the time and I feel that way now.

Seabold, 26, has a 10.55 ERA in 21.1 total innings. NOT GREAT! Maybe the Sox get lucky and can pass him through AAA without a waiver claim. He does have success at the AAA level but what does it really mean?

Maybe I’m being harsh. I just can’t help but constantly be reminded of who Bloom is over and over again. He spends so much time trying to acquire guys to fill out his 40-man roster only to give up on them when he put them in a spot to fail. Over and over again Bloom proves that he’s not a big boy GM capable of this job. We all make mistakes but isn’t it time Bloom starts being held accountable for all these guys that get DFA’d?
