The Oilers should just give the GM job to Jeff Jackson right now because all he’s done is make Ken Holland look like the fool that he really is. Jackson knocked the 2024 NHL Offseason Free Agency period out of the park. So much so that Connor McDavid even weighed in on it.
“They’ve had a great offseason so far,” McDavid told TSN. “It’s been short, it’s been hurried, but I think in the small time they’ve been at it, they’ve done great things. Keeping this many guys together is a good thing. In the salary-cap era, it’s tough to do that.”
McDavid didn’t even have to mince words. There is nothing to hide. The team nailed the offseason and being facetious about it wasn’t even necessary.
Edmonton kept Connor Brown, Adam Henrique, Corey Perry, and Mattias Janmark to reasonable contracts. They then added Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson in free agency. They also pulled off an insane trade sending Ryan McLeod to Buffalo for Matthew Savoie (who was the 9th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft). In totality, that’s some damn good work by Jackson.
Here is my question… why not just give Jackson the job? It appears the Oilers don’t plan to do that and are interviewing President of Hockey Operation candidates. Regardless of who gets the job, the job Jackson did to hold the fort down can’t be ignored. It’s been a strong offseason for the Oilers and they appear to be an even better version of the same team that just went to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
