I tend to get crushes around this time of year when I look toward the upcoming College Football season. Two years ago, I got one for Anthony Richardson, this year I think my crush is Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman. If he can bounce back from his season-ending injury last season, I believe Weigman has all the skills and the talent around him to have a very good year this year.
We are going to address the injury first before we get into the good stuff. Last season, he missed most of the year after suffering a foot injury in week four against Auburn. Quarterbacks are becoming more and more athletic, as Trey likes to say human evolution is real. Weigman has the ability to escape the pocket and be mobile, and you’re going to need to be 100% in the bottom half to do so. Broken bones in the lower part of the body are no joke, so if he can regain his strength he should be in good shape.
Now we get to the good stuff. First, we’re going to look at the games he did play last season.
The teams played against are a mixed bag, yes. UNM and ULM are a bit of a cakewalk. However, I thought he looked good against a Miami team that would be ranked as high as 17 last season and was potentially on track for a good game against Auburn before getting injured. The cast of weapons around him is still good, even after losing Evan Stewart to Oregon. But it’s the intangibles that get me excited.
When you watch Conner Weigman throw, it seems almost effortless. His balls have a ton of juice on them and when he’s on they always end up in the correct spot. He’s got enough athleticism to escape the pocket when pressured and does a good job throwing on the run. Great frame at 6’3, 215 lbs. Former five-star recruit. His snap on the release is crisp, getting the ball out very quickly. More than willing to stand in the pocket and take the hit to deliver the right throw, which I love out of my Quarterback. Very pretty deep ball, albeit a bit inconsistent at times with placement.
The biggest thing that stands out about Weigman is his footwork. He’s a former baseball player (was potentially going to play both sports for Texas A&M when he committed) and maybe that has something to do with it. But it seems like the footwork varies from play to play, and not in a good way. I mentioned the deep ball, while it does look good, he’s prone to putting a little too much air under his passes. I’d like to see him work through his progressions more. It felt like at times he would lock on to his receiver, which can lead to reads from the defense to break up the play.
I believe enough in Conner Weigman that I put him on my Stallions list this year. From the snaps that I have watched, I think there is so much untapped potential there. This Texas A&M team could be a sleeper in the SEC this year, as they are littered with talent on both sides of the ball. If this team is going to make a run at the Conference this year, it all falls on the shoulders of Weigman.
