Commanders Sign Marcus Mariota To One-Year Deal

The Washington Commanders have agreed to a one-year deal with Marcus Mariota, according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter. The deal includes $6 million worth of base pay with the potential to make $10 million.

Mariota has bounced around the league since leaving the Tennessee Titans. In the last four years, he spent time with the Raiders, Falcons, and Eagles. In those stops, he spent the majority of his time as a backup. The sole outlier was in 2022 when he started 13 games for Atlanta.

Mariota, 30, will join Sam Howell in the Commanders quarterback room. Additionally, Washington seems poised to select a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The two players in consideration for that pick are Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.

The addition of Mariota provides a veteran who can serve as a mentor to the Commanders’ upcoming draft selection. It never hurts to have a veteran in the quarterback room.

The signing of Mariota does create questions surrounding Howell’s future in Washington. If Mariota is being brought to backup a rookie quarterback, that would push Howell down the depth chart. It seems like the fifth-round pick could be on his way out of town.

If the Commanders opt to trade Howell, they will likely receive day three compensation. It may not meet their initial cost of a fifth-round pick, but they should be able to find a suitor. As far as landing spots go, Howell’s trade market could be easier to pin down after the draft. Howell’s services will be much more appealing for a team that fails to land the quarterback of their choice on draft night.
