The Commanders haven’t had a real left tackle since a different name called the franchise and Trent Williams played for them. With Jayden Daniels on a rookie contract, Washington is getting aggressive and totally loading up. After trading for Deebo Samuel earlier this offseason, Washington has now acquired offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Texans.
Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news:
Adam Schefter later confirmed the package of picks going to Houston.
Washington is getting Tunsil and a 4th round pick. Going the other way includes a package of 2025 third round pick, 2025 seventh round pick, 2026 second round pick, and a 2026 fourth round pick.
The financial part of this is also a huge part of the equation. Tunsil, 30, had two years remaining on his deal and was in line for an extension in the near future. With this trade, Houston takes on $15 million of dead cap frees up $13.85 million of 2025 space. The Commanders take on $21.3 million this year ($10M gtd) and next year $21.3 million (non-gtd). It stands to reason a new contract will be part of the equation here.
It’s hard to blame Houston for cutting bait here. Tunsil felt like he was starting to decline last year and this is a real haul of draft capital. The challenge now will be replacing Tunsil because the truth is the rest of this offensive line in Houston isn’t very talented. They need to nail these picks for this trade to pan out.
