With the Draft Combine quickly approaching, the Commanders have made the unsurprising decision to release veteran QB Carson Wentz. The move will save the Commanders $26 million as Wentz now looks for his fourth team in as many seasons.
The downward spiral of Wentz’s career is one that is honestly sad to see. As an Eagles fan, Wentz looked like the future after his MVP-like season and led the Eagles to a 13-win season in 2018. Then tragedy struck as he tore his ACL and was forced to watch backup Nick Foles go on a legendary Super Bowl Run.
And ever since that injury/, Carson Wentz was never able to return to that MVP level. And has seemingly got worse each season. The Eagles moved on from Wentz after the 2020 season. Getting a first and compensatory third-round pick from the Colts. Only for the Colts to move on from him after one season, getting a third-round pick back as payment from Washington.
And let’s just say that the Washington era didn’t go very well either. Wentz was benched multiple different times throughout the season. And was even blamed as the main reason why the team was falling behind by Head Coach Ron Rivera.
Now Carson Wentz again finds himself without a team/roster to be a part of. I think it’s clear that his days as a starting QB in the NFL are over. He will likely be picked up as a backup but not before that contract is seriously reworked.
The release of Wentz should make room for UNC product Sam Howell. Yeah, Taylor Heinicke could be brought back, and is a great story, but it’s clear that he’s not the type of QB who can lead your franchise. Howell has shown promise in his limited time and should see more playing time this year as a result.
Honestly, seeing the downward spiral of Wentz’s career is kind of sad. From everything you hear, he just sounds like a great guy who went through a very unideal situation. A country boy trying to survive in Philadephia is forced to watch his backup go in and become a hero within the city.
It’s sure to rattle your confidence, especially when you see a statue of the guy every day you come to practice. That mixed with the physical aspect of returning from the injury just proved to be too much. Some guys have the mental strength to overcome adversity. Others like Carson Wentz simply don’t.
