Clint Capela Signs Three-Year Deal With Houston Rockets

Big man Clint Capela has signed a three-year deal worth $21.5 million with the Houston Rockets. ESPN NBA Senior Insider Shams Charania broke the news.

Capela, 31, is coming off a season where he averaged 8.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and one block in 21.4 minutes of play.

This deal will be a reunion for Capela and Houston. The big man spent the first six years of his career in Houston. Those were also the best years of his career.

The Rockets now have a good amount of center depth. All-Star center Alperen Sengun will take the majority of the center minutes, with Steven Adams taking rotation minutes. Capela will be the team’s third center.

Capela may be past his prime, but he is a quality third-center for any NBA roster. Plus, his contract will be easy to trade if the Rockets decide to make a move.

Houston has been active to kick off NBA free agency. The team used their mid-level exception on forward Dorian Finney-Smith. The two sides agreed to a three-year deal worth $53 million. In smaller news, they also re-signed veterans Jeff Green and Aaron Holiday on minimal deals.

The Rockets’ activity does come at a price, considering they do not have the roster spots to add both Capela and Finney-Smith. The team will have to make another move to accommodate their aggression. That could come in the form of a sign-and-trade for one of the two players, or they could make a separate trade to free up a roster spot. The two most likely casualties in the sequential move are Cam Whitmore and Joc Landale.
