The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired point guard Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Isaac Okoro, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Saturday.
The Bulls extended Lonzo Ball to a two-year, $20 million deal in Chicago after not dealing him at the deadline.
Ball, 27, played in 35 games last season, averaging 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 36.6 percent from the floor, 34.4 percent from 3-point range and 81.5 percent from the free-throw line. He had missed each of the previous two seasons due to myriad knee injuries.
Ball hasn’t been able to stay healthy, but the Bulls elected to sell low on him in exchange for Okoro, added to Chicago’s wing room that features Patrick Williams and newly-drafted Noa Essengue.
The Cavaliers were looking to shave money due to their cumbersome tax bill. Buying low on Ball amid Darius Garland’s toe injury and Ty Jerome’s impending free agency isn’t a bad move, since he only cost $1 million less than Okoro. Of course, he will have to stay healthy, but he owns a $10 million team option next season that they can choose to decline if he has another injury-riddled campaign.
For the Bulls, I’m not sure why they’re selling low on a guard after extending him. His value wasn’t particularly high, but they weren’t forced into trading him this offseason if they couldn’t find the right deal–and I’m not sure Okoro is.
