As a player, former San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was enamored with the spotlight. He was always ready for the biggest moments, helping the organization win three World Series from 2010-14.
In his first year as the Giants’ president of baseball operations, months after making a splash in free agency for Willy Adames, Posey pulled off one of the biggest trades in franchise history Sunday, acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox in stunning fashion.
Ironically enough, this trade was completed moments before the Giants were playing on Sunday Night Baseball against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Players still caught wind of the trade, including Dodgers starter and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw.
“How about that trade?” Kershaw said while he was mic’d up in the 5th inning of Sunday’s game. “That’s wild! [Buster Posey]’s really doing it! Not [Buster Olney]; Buster Posey’s really going for it over there! Good for Buster, man. … I’d consider [Rafael Devers] one of probably the top 10 hitters in the game at worst.”
The Giants are currently two games back of the Dodgers for the NL West at 41-31, owning the fourth-best run differential in the NL.
Devers, 28, is one of the best designated hitters in the sport, slashing .272/.401/.504 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs. He was displeased with the Red Sox front office on multiple occasions about changing positions and made it known through the media. The situation there was a mess, but one that was avoidable if better communication had occurred.
It’s an albatross of a trade from Boston’s perspective. Now, as it was playing its best baseball of the season, it traded away their franchise player for the second time in a half-dozen years for an underwhelming return … and Devers gets to join a lineup flanked by Willy Adames, Jung Hoo Lee and Matt Chapman, who’s currently dealing with a hand injury.
We are over one month away from the 2025 trade deadline, so I’m interested to see how the Giants continue to add … and if the Red Sox continue to sell if they fall back out of contention.
