Classified documents being leaked online has become a growing trend on Discord servers, specifically servers dedicated to games like War Thunder. It’s now spread to other servers as well as a means, more often than not in these cases, to try and win arguments. That’s right, arguments. This latest leak is no exception either.
On March 1 and 2 over 30 government documents, marked with words like “classified” and “confidential” and “top secret,” were leaked onto a Discord server. The server, a fanbase for semi-popular YouTube channel owner wow_mao, was where this leak was first located.
It was not, however, where this leak supposedly originated from. Instead, it has been reported that the server admin who posted the leaked documents originally found them on another discord server. However, as of the writing of this article, it is impossible to verify this, as said previous server has since been deleted. Despite being posted back in March, it would take both the government and the internet over a month to find out about this, with the New York Times first reporting breaking the leaked documents story earlier this month.
The documents primarily focused on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, with supposed plans regarding potential counter-offensives by the Ukrainians against Russia. Sprinkled in with this were other documents focusing on nations like Yemen and other NATO members.
While Ukraine and even Russia have denied the validity of these documents on their respective national news sites, this doesn’t necessarily prove that the documents are fake. But with the United States Federal Government launching an investigation into the matter, we might just get an answer soon, or not.
All of this came as a result of an argument. An argument about the accuracy of Minecraft maps of all things. Yes, this whole event came as a result of an argument between some users on wow_mao’s server and how accurate the wartime map of the Russo-Ukrainian War should be.
Indeed this has been the primary or even sole reason these classified document leaks happen. Gamers with too much time on their hands and the ability to get around government firewalls and server protections.
The most considerable piece of information to take out of this, however, is that it is very unlikely these leaks will stop. More and more people are learning how to avoid blocks and firewalls, and more and more people get obsessed with trying to prove each other wrong.
As long as people online keep having petty arguments, the more classified documents will likely be leaked. It’s not if, but when, these documents will get leaked.
