Class of ’22 Five-Star Forward Cam Whitmore Chooses Villanova

Class of 2022 five-star forward Cam Whitmore has committed to Villanova, per an announcement on CBS Sports HQ. Whitmore chose the Wildcats and Jay Wright over North Carolina and Illinois. The senior forward has been a steady riser all summer with Team Melo on the Nike EYBL circuit and caps off the ride by joining one of the best coaches in all of college basketball.

On why he chose Villanova and Wright, Whitmore told 247Sports this.

“It speaks for itself,” Whitmore told 247Sports. “They win National Championships, so they have history. Coach just got inducted into the Hall of Fame and that’s all you have to say about that. So you have a great coach and a great program and what stood out was me being in that practice and seeing how they were together, linking arms when coach was talking and very disciplined. That really stood the discipline on and off the court. They are competitive and treat you like family.”

When watching film on Whitmore, the first thing that leaps off the page, quite literally, is his freakish athleticism. Slated at 6-6 and an even 200 pounds, he’s a nightmare to guard off the dribble in the interior. With a solid first step and an incredible first jump, opponents are wary of challenging Whitmore at the rim. He can finish up, around and through traffic. Like a fair amount of athletic teenage wings, his outside game is a work in progress. Still, Whitmore figures to be a really good two-way player for Wright next year, and if he becomes a guy who can score at all three levels – something his soon-to-be coach is great at developing with forwards – pray for the Big East. But don’t just take my word for it, take Whitmore’s.

“I’m a guy that already has a strong build and a college ready body,” said Whitmore. “I’m versatile and can do anything on the floor you ask me to do offensively and defensively. I’m also pretty tall and strong for my position and I think I’m the guy for it.”

Whitmore is the third recruit of the Wildcats’ 2022 class, joining four-star combo guard Mark Armstrong and four-star shooting guard Brendan Hausen.
