Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is in contention to be the first overall pick in this year’s draft after two starting seasons for the Buckeyes. But Stroud doesn’t want to go to the team that is picking first overall, the Bears, for one simple reason.
Stroud hopes that the Bears don’t draft him because of their quarterback situation, according to PFT. Justin Fields, the former starting quarterback for the Buckeyes, is already at the helm for Chicago, and Stroud doesn’t want to encroach on his territory.
“I mean, nah, I don’t want to go there,” Stroud said Friday, via PFT. “That’s his team. I can do my thing. I can go build my legacy. He texted me yesterday morning. Me and him are brothers for life.”
The Chicago Bears drafted Fields 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Formerly, Fields was the starter at OSU before Stroud in 2019 and 2020. He led the Buckeyes to a pair of College Football Playoff appearances in both years. In the league, Fields also eclipsed over 1,000 yards rushing in his sophomore season for the Bears, setting himself in stone as one of the best rushing quarterbacks of all time.
“He’s a quarterback. He can sling that rock,” Stroud said, via PFT. “I’m going to stand up for my brother every time, and he’s going to do great things in his career, and I’m excited to play with him [in the NFL].”
Both quarterbacks built legacies at OSU and were on the team together in 2020. The two former Buckeyes built a bond in Columbus and have gained respect for one another. So, we can see why Stroud doesn’t want to get drafted by Fields’ team in Chicago.
“I was proud of him,” Stroud said, via PFT. “There’s so many times when you get knocked down, but I feel like a true man’s character is when you get knocked down, you get up. And he’s got up every time, and he’s stepped up to the plate, and he hasn’t blamed anybody; he hasn’t pointed no fingers; and he hasn’t done anything. As a human, that just shows you what type of man he is and what type of family he comes from.“
