The Boston Red Sox are leading the American League East division with one of the five best records in all of MLB. A big part of their success is that the pitching has been much better than expected. The hitting was never going to be an issue – not with J.D. Martinez, Rafael Devers, and Xander Bogaerts in the lineup. Pitching was the major question mark entering the season. Boston’s staff currently ranks No. 13 in MLB in ERA. That’s not spectacular, but it’s so much better than their No. 28 ranking from last year. It looks like the Red Sox pitching will get even better with the return of Chris Sale.
Chris Sale last pitched for the Red Sox in August 2019. The Boston ace underwent surgery on a damaged UCL that sidelined him and forced a lengthy rehab. Sale made his first start for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs yesterday, pitching 3.2 innings while surrendering zero hits and zero runs. He finished with six strikeouts and a single walk. His velocity was up to 97 mph. It looks like Chris Sale might return to the Red Sox rotation before the end of the summer.
If it was up to me, I’d be starting tomorrow.

Even if Chris Sale is 75% of what he was before his injury, that’s still an upgrade to the Red Sox stable of arms. Adding him to a team that is already in first place would obviously be a major development.
