Chris Martin Likely To Retire After 2025 MLB Season

It’s been a rough season for Chris Martin. The Red Sox are eliminated from postseason contention and Boston only got 41.1 total innings out of Martin this season. The 6-foot-8 righty spent a vast majority of the season on the IL, which makes you question just how much he has left in the tank.

Apparently, Martin is running on fumes. The former Rockies, Yankees, Rangers, Braves, Cubs, and Dodgers reliever says the 2025 MLB Season will likely be his last.

VIA MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith:

“I’m going to play for as long as they let me — as long as I can still do it,” Martin said.

“To be 100% honest, I think next year will be my last year,” Martin said.

“We have a fourth (child) on the way,” Martin said. “Obviously I want to be there for them. And they’re getting to the ages where they’re starting to play sports. I’m getting older. Obviously 40 years old and playing baseball is going to be hard on me mentally and physically. I think that probably will be the cutoff. We’ll see. I don’t want to say 100%. I’d say 95% that next year will be my last year. I just want to be completely focused these last 11 days here and then if the opportunity comes next year — a team’s still gotta want me so we’ll see.”

Martin, 38, is an unrestricted free agent entering the offseason. Time will tell if Boston finds a way to retain him for what will likely be his final MLB season.
