One of the looming questions of Kansas City’s off-season was negotiating a contract with star defensive tackle Chris Jones. After being hit with the franchise tag at the beginning of the off-season, Chris Jones signed a 4-year extension today. The deal can be worth up to $85 million with incentives, per Adam Schefter.
The contract includes $60 million in guarantees, a $37 million signing bonus and worth $85 million if incentives are met.
Chris Jones has been productive for the chiefs his entire career. Originally a 2nd round draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, number 37 overall, Chris Jones has made a noticeable impact on the Kansas City Chiefs. Jones has 33 career sacks, including 2018 when he had 15.5 sacks as a defensive tackle. It’s much more difficult to get pressures and sacks playing on the inside rather than the outside. However, that does not stop Jones from being productive.
When Jones isn’t getting to the quarterback, he’s batting down passes at the line of scrimmage. Jones uses his 6’6 frame very well as he has 20 career pass deflections. He’s also snagged 2 interceptions for his career and has scored a touchdown. That right there is a defensive linemen’s dream.
Chris Jones has also been very durable throughout his career. Jones has only missed 3 games in his 4-year career. Availability is one of, if not the best, ability. Chris Jones is a proven player and he’s earned this money. The Kansas City Chiefs have signed the best player on their offense and defense for the next 4 or more years. The building blocks are set for a team to contend for the next half decade or more. The Chiefs made some noise last year and won the Super Bowl, do not be surprised if they win more.
