Chris Godwin Will Have Surgery on Dislocated Ankle

What a terrible night for Buccaneers fans. Yesterday’s Monday Night Football game against the Baltimore Ravens couldn’t have gone much worse. Mike Evans went down early in the first half with a hamstring injury. Then, with the game firmly in the Raven’s hands, Chris Godwin went down with a gruesome leg injury with just 1:04 left in the fourth quarter. The injury was so gross that ESPN chose not to replay it. Oh yeah, and they lost.

Having a Career Year

Per Ian Rapoport, Chris Godwin will have surgery on what was confirmed to be a dislocated ankle. Unfortunately, this will likely end his season. This is devastating for Godwin, who was having one of his best seasons yet, leading the NFL in receptions with 50. He also ranks second in the NFL in receiving yards through seven weeks with 576.

What makes this situation a little more interesting is that Chris Godwin is a free agent after this season. There is a very real possibility that Godwin played his final game in Tampa last night.

Per Adam Schefter, the hit against Godwin checks all the boxes of a hip-drop tackle, which is now banned in the NFL. The league is currently investigating if the hit by Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith was indeed an illegal tackle. Smith will get fined if the hit is deemed a hip-drop tackle by the NFL.

A reporter asked Bucs head coach Todd Bowles why he kept Godwin in the game with only a few minutes left, despite the Ravens having a decent-sized lead. Per CBS, he responded,” He’s a player, and we’re trying to win the ball game. We were down 10, so we were still trying to get points and kick another onside kick, and it just happened. With Mike [Evans] going down we didn’t have that many receivers as it was, so we played with what we had.”

Us fans will now be deprived of watching one of the best pass catchers in the NFL. It is just an unfortunate situation.
