During the offseason, the Blue Jays put all their eggs in the Shohei Ohtani basket. I wrote a pretty detailed post about it if you need a refresher that tells you everything you need to know. It was a dumb strategy from day one but now a player that’s actually on the roster is calling them out for it. Chris Bassitt dropped a truth bomb essentially saying that the Jays front office had zero pivot when they missed on Ohtani.
He’s obviously right… but below I’ll share what he said:
“The one thing I will say about the Blue Jays for this year, we put $700 million into Shohei Ohtani’s basket and didn’t get him. We really didn’t have a pivot,” Bassitt told Chris Rose Sports.
“some of the problems I don’t think are fixable.”
“There’s so many things that you could talk about. I can literally talk for 45 minutes on this, on things that didn’t go great, but I just don’t think saying those things publicly is what is best for this organization,” Bassitt said.
Amen.
Since Bassitt can’t say more I’ll continue. Want to know the most hilarious part? They’re about to make the same mistake again. Toronto is planning to make a big bid for Juan Soto and will have no backup plan when they don’t land him because Scott Boras won’t send him to a spot he has to pay Canadian taxes.
Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins totally botched this thing. They missed their window (which was about two years ago) and are currently suffering the consequences for it. Now it’s too late and they already waited too long to cash in on a Vlad trade. I feel bad for their fans. Even their own players are saying it’s been mismanaged. That’s the truth.
