All credit to new head coach Ben Johnson, because he is putting in work to try and protect franchise quarterback Caleb Williams. After trading for Jonah Jackson from the Rams, it was announced today that the Chicago Bears are trading for former All-Pro Joe Thuney from the Kansas City Chiefs. This Bears’ offensive line needed a massive overhaul, and they are certainly on the right path to do so, and more importantly, keep Williams upright this season. The Chiefs will receive a 2026 fourth-round pick in exchange for Thuney.
Thuney, 32, signed with the Chiefs back in 2021 after playing five seasons for the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowls, and would win another two with the Chiefs. During the season, due to injuries along the offensive line, Thuney slid over from his normal guard spot to play left tackle. The move did not hamper his play at all, as he earned his second straight first-team All-Pro nod, along with a Pro Bowl spot, as well. The move will save the Chiefs $16 million in cap space for 2025.
As mentioned above, the Kansas City Chiefs placed their franchise tag on guard Trey Smith, a move that surprised many as he was expected to walk in free agency and was predicted to land in Chicago. However, the Bears pivoted for Joe Thuney. This move brings a ton of veteran leadership to this offensive line which was in desperate need of leadership and experience. Thuney will be an exceptional voice in this position group. Landing someone the caliber of Thuney for the price it costs should be viewed as a win for the Bears.
