The Kansas City Chiefs are signing quarterback Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal, NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero were among the first to report Thursday.
Minshew, 28, was released by the Las Vegas Raiders with a “failed physical designation” earlier this week. He suffered a season-ending collarbone injury in Week 12. Though it wasn’t long before the longtime backup quarterback was able to find a new home.
The seventh-year signal caller will be an arguable upgrade over Carson Wentz, who served as Patrick Mahomes‘ backup last season. In nine starts for the Raiders, he completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 2,013 yards, though he sported a negative touchdown-to-interception ratio (9:10).
For his career, however, Gardner Minshew has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 11,950 yards, 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. He made a Pro Bowl with the Colts in 2023 after throwing for 3,305 yards and 15 touchdowns in 13 starts.
He will join a quarterback room that features Mahomes and Bailey Zappe, who was a part of the Chiefs’ practice squad ahead of last season. Being a backup quarterback is one of the best jobs in sports, and now Minshew will be collecting checks while learning behind arguably the NFL’s best quarterback in Mahomes.
There is no official number that has been disclosed for his contract. He will be earning $3.2 million this season from the Raiders, according to Spotrac.
