Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the team announced Sunday.
Dosunmu, who turned 25-years-old in January, missed each of the team’s previous three games due to a shoulder injury before playing Friday against the Toronto Raptors. He played 23 minutes, scoring 11 points with five rebounds, two assists and one steal on 5-of-9 shooting.
Before the impending surgery was announced, he was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Indiana Pacers with the shoulder injury.
Dosunmu was one of the team’s more impactful two-way guards this season. Through 46 games, he averaged career highs in points (12.3), rebounds (3.5) and assists (4.5) on 49.2 percent shooting, including 32.8 percent from 3-point range and 78.5 percent from the free-throw line.
The 6-foot-5 guard will have one more year left on his deal after 2025-26 for $7.5 million, according to Spotrac. It’s an inconsequential salary to the Bulls’ confounding books. Though their brass will still have plenty of decisions to make regarding their guard rotation, which includes Lonzo Ball (who just signed an extension), Kevin Huerter, Coby White and Jevon Carter (player option) next season. At some point, there needs to be some sort of consolidation–likely in exchange for future assets–in what will likely be a multi-year rebuild.
In a perfect world, they should try to prioritize retaining Dosumnu at his number, but his $7.5 million will have value as an expiring–regardless of his recent injury. I’m curious to see how this mediocre roster shakes out, but it objectively sucks to see anyone–let alone one of their most impactful guards–have their season cut short due to injury.
